Russian-Tongan relations

Russian-Tongan relations are bilateral diplomatic relations between Russia and Tonga . The Soviet Union established diplomatic relations with Tonga on October 2, 1975. In Tonga , the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to New Zealand is concurrently accredited; in Russia, also concurrently, the Ambassador of Tonga to the United Kingdom .

In January 2008, 2010 and 2012, King of Tonga George Tupou V visited Moscow on a private visit. Trade and economic ties are practically absent. Small consignments of Russian goods are delivered to Tonga through third countries. On October 2, 2005, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga exchanged telegrams with congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two peoples. Its chapters expressed confidence in the further development of Russian-Tongan relations in the interests of the peoples of both countries and the strengthening of peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region.
