Asia

India and Bangladesh

The main medical degrees in India and Bangladesh are Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery, BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) and BHMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery). They typically consist of a four and a half year course followed by a year of compulsory rotational internship in India. In Bangladesh, this is a five year course followed by a year of compulsory rotational internship. The internship requires the candidate to work in all departments for a specified period of time, to undergo practical training in treating patients.

Registration of doctors is usually done by state medical councils. Permanent registration as a registered practitioner is permitted only after satisfactory completion of compulsory practice.

The Federation of Associations of Family Doctors of India (FFPAI) is an organization that has connections with more than 8,000 general practitioners through affiliate membership. [3]

Pakistan

In Pakistan, for five years, the Bachelor of Medicine (specialization - surgery) is followed by one year of internship in various specialties. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) then provides ongoing registration, after which the candidate can choose to practice as a general practitioner or choose specialized training.

The first family medicine curriculum was approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) in 1992 and launched in 1993 by the Family Medicine Division of the Department of Social Health Sciences at Aga Khan University, Pakistan. [four]

The Ziauddin University Family Residency Program has been approved by the Family Medicine Community. [five]

Europe

France

Russia

In the Soviet Union, the specialty of “general practitioner” did not exist, the therapist performed similar functions. In the Russian Federation, the Regulation on a General Practitioner was introduced in 1992, after which medical universities began training in the relevant specialty.

The right to work as a general practitioner gives a certificate of qualification. General medical practice can be carried out both individually and in a group, including with the participation of narrow specialists. The work of general practitioners is allowed, both in a medical institution and in private practice [2] .

A general practitioner has broad legal rights. He can manage junior medical personnel, provide services under medical insurance contracts, conclude additional contracts to the main contract, and conduct an examination of the quality of medical services. For self-decisions, the general practitioner is responsible in accordance with the law [2] .

The main tasks of a general practitioner are [2] :

  • prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the most common diseases;
  • emergency and emergency medical care;
  • performing medical manipulations.

UK

At the UK National Health Service , a general practitioner (GP) plays a central role. With rare exceptions (such as, for example, a podiatrist or physiotherapist ), a general practitioner is the first doctor to be consulted by a patient, often to get referrals for preliminary tests or to a specialist doctor.

USA

In the US healthcare system, a general practitioner has a major role in treating patients, it is he who monitors the course of treatment, sees the patient as a whole. Sometimes assessing the patient’s condition at the first visit to a doctor, deciding how seriously he is ill, is much more difficult than prescribing a particular treatment regimen when the patient is already fully examined. Thus, a distinguishing feature of a general practitioner is the extraordinary breadth of knowledge both from experience, from conversations with colleagues, and from medical literature. To qualify for general practice, you must pass an exam (for example, United States Medical Licensing Examination ).
