Camponotus turkestanicus (lat.) Is a species of earthen ants of the genus Camponotus from the subfamily Formicina ( Formicidae ).

Central Palaearctic: Afghanistan , Iran , Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan , China , Russia (Kalmykia), Turkmenistan . Semideserts , steppes [1] [2] [3] [4] .
Description
Earth ants nest in the soil in oases , tugai and salt marshes of Central and Central Asia, endure strong salinization of soils. The head and chest are mostly reddish, the abdomen is black. Medium in size, workers and soldiers 7-13 mm long; females - 15-17 mm; males - 8-9.5 mm. The scape of the antennae is long, extends beyond the occipital margin of the head. The underside of the head with numerous hairs forming an imperfect psammophore in workers. On cheeks, shins of legs and on a skapus there are no separated hairs. The anterior margin of the clypeus with a rectangular lobe that projects forward beyond the front corners of the head. The chest in profile is uniformly convex. Propodeum without transverse impression, round and without epinotal spines or teeth. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of one segment ( petiolus ), bearing a vertical scale. They nest in earthen anthills (multi-sectional nests connected by numerous passages); the depth of underground passages reaches 2 m down to groundwater. The mating season of winged sexual individuals (young females and males) is observed in April-May. Only adults , working individuals and females leave for wintering [1] [2] [5] [3] .
Systematics
The species was first described in 1887 by the Italian worldmecologist Carlo Emery under the original name Camponotus sylvaticus st. turkestanicus Emery, 1887 and in 1925, was included in the subgenus Tanaemyrmex together with species such as Camponotus turkestanus , Camponotus aethiops , Camponotus xerxes and Camponotus fedtschenkoi [1] [2] [6] .
