Ivan Nenov ( Bulgarian. Ivan Vasilev Nenov ; May 17, 1902 - September 4, 1997 ) - Bulgarian easel painter (preferred oil and tempera technique), mosaicist , 20th century ceramist . As an art critic , he published research texts. Known for his portraits, paintings depicting naked women, often against the backdrop of open space: on the seashore, in the opening of a balcony opening [1] . Starting from early student work, he demonstrated the highest pictorial culture, sophistication of color, and fluency in drawing a human figure [2] .

Biography
Ivan Nonev was born on May 17, 1902 . In 1925 he graduated from the Academy of Arts in Sofia in the painting class, in the studio of Professor Nikola Marinov . He joined the Society of New Artists [3] .
At the beginning of 1944 , a bomb of the Allied aircraft, which systematically attacked the Bulgarian capital (Bulgarian), fell on his studio in Sofia. The workshop burned to the ground. Fire destroyed about a hundred works created since the 20s [4] .
In the 50s , to top all the troubles, the artist was repressed “for formalism” (the same, however, happened in relation to the majority of independent-minded, European-oriented artists of that generation). Then Nenov discovered the purely artistic, decorative properties of ceramics , not related to its utilitarian function [5] . After he was dismissed from the National Academy of Fine Arts and received a ban on the profession of a painter (he was not allowed to exhibit or sell his work), he mastered the profession of a potter and sculptor in the small plastic genre: terracotta , fireclay , glaze .
Unlike a number of less persistent colleagues, Ivan Nenov did not compromise. Forced to remain in isolation, he realized how high the price of freedom for an artist was, and was ready to pay this price [6] .
Creativity
Stylistically, many of the works characteristic of Nenova are composed, like charades, from a string of references to the history of modern art. The plastic development of the artist went in parallel with Picassian neoclassicist things, with metaphysical painting by de Chirico [7] , with the experience of some surrealists : Dali , Tangi ; to some extent, with Strzheminsky’s experiments (but without going into pointlessness ).
An original visiting card of Ivan Nenov was his canvases with women in front of a mirror and / or at the balcony overlooking the sea in Sozopol [8] . The work was performed in a special technique developed by Nenova, hardly accessible to follow [9] . A highly brightened, noblely restrained color brings luminiferous spatiality to the paintings.
