The first ever European winter throwing challenge was held March 17-18, 2001 at the Charles Erman Stadium in Nice , France . The tournament program included shot put , discus throw , hammer throw and javelin throw . 2 team trophies were played, among men and women. The competition was attended by 151 throwers from 21 European countries.

Each country could exhibit up to 2 people in each discipline. Both results in each type of throwing counted for the team, after which they were transferred to points using the IAAF International Results Translation Table. The winners and prize-winners in the team standings were determined by the sum of the points received. In addition, for the only time in history, results were summed up in the general (mixed) classification after summing up the results of men and women.
