Sean John Combs was born on November 4, 1969 in Harlem. Two years later, his father was shot dead in a street "showdown", and the family moved to another area of New York. In the late 1980s, Combs got a job at the record company Uptown Records , where he was responsible for finding and signing contracts with promising hip-hop artists, including Mary J Blige , Asher , Lil 'Kim and many other stars of today.
In 1993, Combs founded his own label, Bad Boy Records , which produced records based on a very wide sampling of famous hits of past years - which irritated music critics and many competing rappers. A typical example of this kind is “ Come with Me ”, a theme written by Combs for the movie “ Godzilla ” (1998), which was based on the classic hit “ Kashmir ” by Led Zeppelin ( Jimmy Page himself participated in the rewriting).
In 1997, Combs led a hip-hop breakthrough into the mainstream music after killing rapper The Notorious BIG , a friend of his, having released, in collaboration with his deceased wife, Faith Evans , a “memorial” track “ I'll Be Missing You, ” partially citing the old hit The Police Every Breath You Take and a Grammy Award for Best Duo Rap Performance.
On December 27, 1999, a serious shoot-out occurred in the nightclub where Combs and his girlfriend Jennifer Lopez were located, and a stolen gun was found when police searched their car. Over the next few years, Combs was involved in ongoing trials, in particular on charges of illegal possession of weapons.
Competing labels and music commentators often accuse Combs of total commercialization of hip-hop, as well as musical activity, he develops a clothing line and a restaurant chain. In September 1996, Shakur was killed. After that, a wave of murders of rap artists swept across America, caused by the same struggle between "western" and "eastern" rappers. And yet, Combs and Snoop Doggy Dogg , who represented the West Coast, soon appeared on a television program where they shook hands to reconcile their criminal music groups.
