Biography

Vicente Mateus was born in a family of Portuguese and Spanish in Zamora (according to other sources, in Vigo ), he was the eldest of 11 children. As a child, Vicente moved with his family to Brazil. Vicente's father, Louis, was the founder of a mining company and when his eldest son grew up, he began to successfully manage it [2] . At the age of 18, Vicente Mateus managed to sign a contract with the municipality of São Paulo for the supply of raw materials for construction companies, so that the profitability of his companies increased sharply [2] . The main items of income for his enterprises were asphalt and concrete .

In 1954, Vicente met a professional flamenco dancer Marlene Cola during the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of São Paulo, they became friends. In 1959, Vicente first headed the Corinthians. Left the club in 1961. After the death of his first wife, Ruth Pereira Mateus, with whom Vicente married in 1934, on August 14, 1968, Vicente married Marlene [2] . Three years later, when Vicente returned to Corinthians as vice president, Marlene began working in the social department of this club. A year later, Vicente headed the Corinthians for the second time, working in this position until 1981. This period was marked by the termination of record periods in the history of the club without trophies - in 1977 the team won the League of Paulista, which could not be done for 23 years.

In 1990, during the presidency of Mateus, Corinthians became the champion of Brazil for the first time in its history.

After it became clear that Vicente Mateus would no longer be able to run for president of Corinthians in 1991, he nominated Marlene as his successor. Marlene won the election with 2119 voters and became the first woman to head one of the great Brazilian clubs as president. During her reign, the team failed to achieve serious success in the sports arena, which gave a trump card in the fight for the post of Alberto Doualib . He won the election in 1993 and during his presidency, the Corinthians managed to win almost all the trophies of world football, including the title of club world champion in 2000 . Vicente Mateus died in 1997, and his widow Marlene continues to actively participate in the club’s life [3] .

Vicente Mateus adhered to the traditional authoritarian style of management, both business and sports club. Despite this, he was popular among fans. He was known for his extraordinary statements, sometimes contradicting each other [2] .

Corinthians titles during the presidency of Vicente Mateus

  • Champion of Brazil (1): 1990
  • São Paulo State Champion (3): 1977 , 1979 , 1988
