The Candidate ( The Candidate ) is an American political comedy and drama film directed by Michael Ritchie with Robert Redford and Peter Boyle in the lead roles. The Oscar-winning screenplay was written by Jeremy Larner, speechwriter Senator Eugene J. McCarthy during the McCarthy campaign for the Democratic Party's primaries in 1968 [1] .

Content
Story
The film tells about the election campaign for the post of senator. An honest idealist attorney nominates his candidacy for the post of senator from the state of California.

Awards
- In 1973, the film won the Academy Award in the Best Original Screenplay category (Jeremy Larner). The film was also nominated for the Best Sound nomination (Gene S. Kantamessa), but Robert Knudson received the prize for the Cabaret film. [2]
