Biography
Al-Adid became a caliph in 1160 after the death of his young brother al-Faiz . The influence of the Fatimid dynasty at that time was already so weak that the crusaders were able to launch an invasion of Egypt .
Shavar, the nominee of the Syrian Emir Nur al-Din Zangi , achieved the position of vizier at the court of al-Adid ( 1163 - 1169 ) and became the de facto ruler of the state. Thanks to the delicate balance in relations with the Crusaders and the Zengids, Shavar managed to keep the country from chaos. In fact, Egypt's security was ensured by the fact that Nur al-Din, if necessary, could provide Shavar with the Syrian troops of Generals Shirkukh and Saladin to combat the possible invasion of the crusaders.
It is noteworthy that in 1167 the alliance collapsed due to an agreement between the Caliph and the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the Zengids. The Crusader ambassadors, Hugo Grenier Hospitaller and Templar Geoffrey Fulke, arrived at the Caliph’s palace in Cairo , the circumstances of this visit were described by William of Tire , who was in the retinue of ambassadors.
However, in the end, Shirkuh killed Shavar and took his place in 1169 , and after Shirkuh's death, his nephew Saladin became the vizier of Egypt. When al-Adid died of natural causes in 1171 , the Fatimid dynasty stopped, opening the path of the Ayyubid dynasty ( 1171 - 1260 ) (on behalf of the father of Saladin Ayyub).
