Sports career
He grew up in Jamaica, moving to England at the age of 19. There he played at a cricket school and was engaged in bodybuilding. He began training in weightlifting only at 22, but quickly achieved high results due to excellent anthropometric data. His mentors from the British Weightlifting Association became Al Murray. In 1959, the athlete won his first British championship and in the same year won the gold medal at the World Championship in Warsaw in the middle weight category (up to 90 kg). Subsequently, he won three more world championships.
At the Summer Olympics in Rome (1960) he won a bronze medal, and four years later in Tokyo (1964) he became the silver medalist of the Olympics. At the Summer Games in Mexico City (1968) he performed unsuccessfully.
He was the world record holder in the two-handed jerk - 190.5 kg, Tehran (1965) and in the Olympic triathlon: - 480 kg in Budapest (1962) and 487.5 kg in London (1965).
