Biography

He was born on March 18, 1745 in Zaraysk, Pereslavl-Ryazan province in the family of a merchant who belonged to the ancient branch of the Bespopovites - the Fedoseyev consent , which does not recognize the legality of marriages "in the anti-Christ world." He studied theological sciences, having received a good education. Separated from the "Fedoseyevites", he became an advocate of the doctrine of the legality of marriage performed by the laity. At the same time, Skachkov appealed to the creations of St. Dionysius the Areopagite, cited evidence from Christian history, pointing, for example, to the lack of marriage in the time of Basil the Great. Since the 1770s, on behalf of the Moscow Pomors, he negotiated reconciliation and unanimity with the brethren of the historical center of the Pomeranian consent - Vygovsky Danilov Monastery. After some time, his efforts were crowned with success - in the winter of 1798, Skachkov brought to Moscow a message from the Vygov elders who blessed marriage.

In 1803, Gabriel Skachkov composed The Rite of Marriage Prayer, or The Canon Sung During a Combination of a Sacred Wordless Marriage. This order has long been the subject of internal discussions among the Pomors. Also, the question of the legality of the Skachkov’s rank was specifically discussed at the First All-Russian Council of Pomors, and ended up with the newly introduced rank being recognized equal to the old. In October 1807, he was elected rector of the Moninsky Prayer Hall (named after the merchant Monin, who took a significant part in it) and the spiritual father of the Moscow Pomeranian community. In 1812, under the threat of the capture of Moscow by Napoleon, he ordered the evacuation of the prayer property to other cities of Russia, and he remained in Moscow for the sake of the sick and infirm. In a fire in Moscow during the retreat of the French troops, the Moninsky prayer burned down. After the French left, Skachkov organized a fundraiser for the construction of a new stone building of the chapel, which was built in its former place.

He died on August 15, 1821 in Moscow. He was buried at the Preobrazhensky cemetery (the grave has not been preserved to this day). G.I. Skachkov was the author of over thirty works, mainly related to marriage.
