Story
The novel takes place in medieval Russia in the XV-XVI centuries. The main character is the herbalist Arseny, who has healing abilities, who grew up with his grandfather Christopher, a letter and a sorcerer. His secret beloved, unmarried wife Ustin dies during childbirth, their son dies in the womb. Arseny, lamenting that Ustina died because of him and without communion, seeks to atone for sin and to pray for her soul, devoting her life to it. With a relentless love for Ustin, during his long life he becomes a wandering herbalist, healing people, a holy fool , who takes the name of his beloved, travels to Jerusalem as a pilgrim and back, tonsures into monks, and then to the schema, taking the name Laurus.
Description
The novel "Laurel" is written in modern Russian and Old Russian [2] . According to the philologist S. Drugoveiko-Dolzhanskaya, which the book delighted, the hero of the Lavra “for almost one literally monologue” speaks either of “pure old Russian ..., then the Middle Soviet ..., or the early Post-Pentelligent” [3] .
T. Morozova, in a review for the Znamya magazine, noted Vodolazkin’s well-chosen tone of narration, which lacks “cardboard archaism,“ old Russian longing “, and heavy resonance.” In her opinion, “the author manages to combine amusement rare for serious literature with intellectual and spiritual principles” [4] .
In October 2013, Lavr became the winner of the Yasnaya Polyana Book Prize in the 21st Century nomination [5] . In November of the same year, the novel became the winner of the Big Book Prize [2] . The novel has been translated into more than twenty foreign languages, serious research works have been devoted to it [6] . On October 22, 2015, at the Helsinki Book Fair , a presentation of the translation of the novel into Finnish was held [7] .
