Organization
The fund was organized at the expense of the German banking family Arnolds, whose property before the Second World War was nationalized by Nazi Germany , and its members themselves had to flee through Switzerland to the USA [10] .
The fund was conceived by Rainer Arnold, a pediatrician , philanthropist, and avid traveler who has dedicated himself to training healthcare providers in developing countries - Peru, Bolivia, Uganda, Somalia, Pakistan and others. He wanted to help the people of these countries get out of poverty, to give children an education and decent work in the future. In 1993, during a trip with a group of medical students in the Bolivian Andes, Reiner suddenly died.
In pursuance of his brother’s ideas, Henry Arnold [11] created a nonprofit foundation, inviting comrade Rainer Kevin Starr (managing director Kevin Starr ) to join it.
The foundation was named after the Mulago hill in the central part of Uganda 's capital, Kampala .
The Fon Mulago headquarters is located in San Francisco , California , USA .
Among the investment projects of the Mulago Fund: Smallholders Foundation , Living Goods , Educate Girls , One Acre Fund , myAgro , Proximity Designs , Root Capital , Medic Mobile , Blue Ventures , KOMAZA , Samasource , VisionSpring , The MicroDreams Foundation , VillageReach , Jacaranda Health , Off. Grid: Electric and others.
Activities
The Mulago Fund is one of the largest social investors, aimed at investments that provide high social impact.
Unlike other similar organizations, he does not accept applications from those who wish, but searches for objects for investment on his own.
Fund manager Kevin Starr is skeptical of the profitability of social enterprises , citing many arguments for his position, so he is ready to invest not only in the form of loans and contributions to the authorized capital, but also in the form of grants [12] . He expresses the fund’s policy with the words: “Regardless of whether you are aiming for profit (for-profit) or non-profit (not-for-profit), your activity should be determined by what will have the greatest social impact (impact). <...> My job is to buy exposure. To receive the maximum "social" return (bang) for each of my donated dollars " [13] .
The Mulago Foundation claims that it can provide almost unlimited investments indefinitely in anticipation of the desired social effect [14] . According to the data for 2010-2011, the Mulago Fund had its own assets in the amount of more than 171 million US dollars, while investing more than 7 million dollars [1] .
Working with organizations, the Mulago Foundation uses five steps to identify potential impacts [15] :
- Determining the real purpose of the mission and the final result (including the target group to which the impact is directed).
- Choosing the right indicator that shows the accomplished mission.
- The need to show the changes and prove the reality of their implementation using the selected methods.
- Using concrete numbers as an example, show the efforts that caused the changes and made the impact (and also show what would have happened without these changes).
- Determining the cost of the project, as well as the real proportion of costs and the result.
Ratings
GiveWell has placed the Mulago Foundation as a leading investor in the field of high social impact on a par with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Skoll Foundation [16] [17] .
