History

The market got its name from the nearby Danilov Monastery , which was founded in 1282 by Prince Daniil , the youngest son of Alexander Nevsky . In the Middle Ages, in Russia near monasteries, trade was carried out. Historians suggest that the trading area on the site of the modern Danilovsky market existed from the XIII - XIV centuries [2] .

On May 18, 1963, by order No. 1130 of the Moscow Soviet, the Danilovsky collective farm market was officially established at the place of spontaneous trade. By the decision of the Moscow City Council of January 9, 1969, the charter of the market was approved in accordance with the principles of cost accounting [1] .

In the 1970s, the design of a modern building began as part of the general trend of building indoor agricultural markets in Moscow. The authors of the project were architects Felix Novikov and Gabriel Akulov. The roof structure of the new building was created by engineer Victor Shablya, the author of the design of the folded dome - the “daisy” of the Druzhba stadium in Luzhniki , which was under construction in the same years for the 1980 Olympics . For floors used reinforced concrete vaulted shells. In the central part of the building, a glass light window was equipped for lighting and ventilation: its diameter was 15 meters. The construction of the covered market was completed in 1986 [2] [1] [3] .

After the collapse of the USSR, the market continued to be in the ownership of the city and experienced problems with the technical condition of the building, crime, organization of trade, change of leadership. In the mid -1990s, there were rumors that Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov was going to transfer it to the Cossacks , but no further action was taken. In the 2000s, the market was put up for auction ; subsequently, information was circulated on the construction of a shopping center in its place. Bidding was repeatedly disrupted due to the lack of applications and the prohibition of participants. Later, the city authorities abandoned the idea of building any commercial facilities on the territory of agricultural markets [4] [5] [6] .

Modernity

In 2011, the Moscow Government appointed Maxim Popov, restaurateur, director of the market, representative of the Ginza Project , which manages several catering chains. The modernization of the market began, a cafe began to open on its territory, grocery delivery was established, pavilions and a veterinary office were updated, air conditioners were installed, sellers began to wear a single uniform with company symbols. As of 2012, the market revenue from rent amounted to almost 90 million rubles, the company's profitability reached 20% [7] . At the same time, due to ongoing trading and an incomprehensible situation with the owner, rumors continued to circulate about a possible market closure [4] [8] [9] [10] .

In 2014, the Moscow City Hall transferred 100% of the shares of the Danilovsky market to the State Unitary Enterprise Mosimushchestvo. They tried to privatize the market twice, but bidding with an initial value of 1.433 billion rubles. recognized as invalid [7] . In 2015, Expert Union, a company close to the Ginza Project, acquired the market, the transaction value amounted to 425 million rubles, which is almost five times lower than the starting price, while the Moscow Property Ministry imposed a condition to invest 800 million rubles in the reconstruction. and save the trading functions of the facility. Maxim Popov retained the post of director. Gradually, a variety of cafes and restaurants began to open in the market; the first establishment, the Baton bakery, began work back in May 2014. With the change of leadership, more than 20 gastronomic shops opened, culinary master classes , fairs, festivals, lectures, various cultural events began to be held [4] [10] [11] [12] [13] .

In November 2015, the market leadership again changed: the post of general director was taken by another representative of the Ginza Project, Andrei Zagrebelko, and Timur Bolotov, the former manager of the Flakon Design Factory shopping and entertainment center, became the development director [14] [12] .

In 2016, the reconstruction of the Danilovsky market began with the preservation of the architectural appearance of the building, which was completed by the spring of 2017. During this time, the facade was glazed, the roof and floor screed were replaced, the electrical equipment and decorative decoration of the stairs were updated. After the repair, the first floor of the market was given over to the shopping area, the second - for events, cafes and restaurants with national and original cuisine. Convenient navigation around the market was organized, a children's room, a hotel, a tasting zone, a bookcrossing zone, a clothing processing center [15] [16] [17] began work .

At the end of 2018, a possible sale of the market for 1.5–2 billion rubles was announced. PIK construction company [7] .

Architecture

From an engineering point of view, the building of the covered market is a dome with a diameter of 72 meters, consisting of two main elements. One of them is a 14-blade reinforced concrete “daisy” with a small geodesic dome with a diameter of 15 meters in the middle for lighting and ventilation. Chamomile petals are made of diamond-shaped reinforced concrete slabs. Plates are highly durable, although in some places their thickness does not exceed 4 cm. Due to its design, the roof of the building does not need to be cleaned from snow and ice even in winter [2] .

Another structural element of the market dome is triangular cantilever shells on the outer perimeter, resembling sails. They are also made of prefabricated reinforced concrete slabs and form in a circle a chain of lancet arches with edges about 35 mm thick. According to the original architectural concept, the space under the “sails” was supposed to remain open, however, at present, the arches are closed with awnings [2] .

The dome of the building has its own foundation : where the petals touch the ground, the reinforcement goes into the soil about 8 meters. In the hollow space between them is a basement. Part of the market, located under a round 15-meter dome, rests on a different foundation on a concrete slab [1] .

The metal construction of the dome behaves differently depending on the ambient temperature. Concrete heated in the sun expands slightly and bends, and when the air temperature drops, it returns to its previous state. Visually, this movement is imperceptible, its amplitude is 20 millimeters [1] .

From the very beginning, it was planned to make the market all-weather, for which a circular stained-glass window was designed under the dome for additional lighting and protection from the cold. The solution was not implemented, as it required a reduction in retail space in the cold season. The modern dome cover is made of polyurethane with waterproofing and isolation from condensate and is equipped with an additional membrane of several layers of PVC with a polyester mesh for the release of warm air and protection from precipitation [2] [1] .

Behind the dome, an elongated building is organized, where the hotel, warehouse and administrative premises are located [2] .
