Biography

He studied medicine at the universities of Basel and Budapest. In 1940 he changed the name Shimert to Szentagothai.

Since 1936 he worked at the University of Budapest . In 1946-1963 he headed the Department of Anatomy of the Medical School of the University of Pecs . In 1963 he became a professor at the Department of Anatomy of the University. At the same time, he served as director of the Institute of Anatomy of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1948, since 1967 - full member, from 1977 to 1985 - President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. A member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1976) and the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1982), a foreign member of the United States National Academy of Sciences (1972) [3] , the Royal Society of London (1978) [4] , a member of the German Academy of Naturalists Leopoldin , etc.

Member of the National Assembly of Hungary (1985-1994), was a member of the Presidium of Hungary. In the late 1980s, he became an activist in the opposition to the communist government of the Hungarian Democratic Forum .

Died of a heart attack.

Scientific activity

He conducted research in the field of macro- and microstructure, morphology and physiology of the nervous system . He studied the structure of nerve centers and the mechanisms of neurohumoral regulation of the brain and spinal cord and the influence of the nervous system on endocrine functions.

Using electron microscopy methods, he studied synaptic connections and the structure of simple reflex pathways, pathways and mechanisms of labyrinth oculomotor reflexes and sensory systems. In the external cranked bodies, he discovered special complex structures - glomeruli (glomeruli of the kidneys). In 1968, he drew attention to the inconsistency of the morphology of axonal contacts with the concept of presynaptic inhibition. He performed a number of works on the structure and connections of the hypothalamus and cerebral cortex .

Creator of a number of conceptual models of the nervous system (1976).

The author of the Atlas of Human Anatomy (1946-1975). One of the editors of the journals Act of Morphology (since 1951) and Act of Biology (since 1955).
