The exact definition of the “knee” is as follows: two people who are not direct relatives of each other, that is, not lying on the same line in the family tree ) are related in the kth knee, if k is the minimum number of steps that must be taken up a family tree from one of these two people to meet their common ancestor. Kinship in the knee is “horizontal” kinship in the family tree (the lower we go down the tree, the wider it is, and relatives - further in kinship).
Do not confuse the number of knees to the first common relative and the actual number of knees between relatives. For example, brothers and sisters have a common relative through one knee, but two knees separate them from each other.
Brothers and sisters are related to each other by relatives in the first knee or by relatives (it is enough to go up one level along the family tree to meet their ancestor - the common parent). But at the same time, siblings are relatives through two tribes, since everyone needs to rise to a common ancestor (one knee) and go down to his brother or sister (plus one more knee). However, only parents with children have a connection through one knee. In turn, the children of the children are related to each other by relatives in the second level of the knees or “cousins” (they have a common ancestor - grandfather or grandmother ), but at the same time have a connection through four knees. Uncle and nephew are related to each other in the first knee or relatives , since rising from the uncle one level up, we find their common relative ( father / mother of one and grandfather / grandmother of the other).
The relationship of the cousin uncle and the great-great cousin nephew speak for themselves.
