In 2006 [4] —2010 he worked as a freelance correspondent for the newspaper Nizhny Novgorod Worker , where his historical and local history essays were published twice a month [4] , and from 2008 [5] to 2010 [5] , which had a significant resonance articles [5] on the history of local cemeteries - necropolism . He planned to release the book "Nizhny Novgorod Necropolis" [4] . As Anatoly Moskvin himself said in an interview in 2007, over the previous 20 years he studied more than 750 cemeteries in the Nizhny Novgorod region and other regions of Russia [6] [7] . He was the main author of the newspaper “Obituary NN”, published several dozen cemetery essays there, but did not receive a fee [3] . Criminal proceedings and forced treatment
On November 2, 2011, during a search of the apartment where Moskvin lived with his parents, and in his garage, 26 mummified bodies were discovered - life-size puppets made from the remains of girls excavated in cemeteries [4] [10] [8] . According to the investigation, the bodies were removed from the graves in the cemeteries "New Striginsky", "Novo-Sormovsky" , "Maryina Roshcha" , "Rumyantsevo", "Nizhny Novgorod" of the Kstovsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region, as well as the Kuzminsky cemetery in Moscow and Dolgoprudnensky South cemetery [10] . Moskvin was charged under Article 244 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Abuse of the graves and bodies of the dead” [10] .
In May 2012, a trial was held [11] . Moskvin was declared insane; the court released him from criminal liability by prescribing compulsory psychiatric treatment . The prosecution was satisfied with the decision and refused to appeal the verdict [12] [13] . Moskvin was sent to a psychiatric hospital for six months, but every six months the court extends the term for another six months [14] [15] [16] . Lawyer V. Volkova, known for the defense of the Pussy Riot group, took up the Moskvin case [17] . In the summer of 2015, Moskvin was sent for a second psychiatric examination [17] and on July 30, compulsory treatment was extended [18] .
V. Stravinskas, the head of the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, called the Moskvin case an exceptional case that has no analogues in modern forensics [19] . Colleagues spoke of the defendant as a kind, ingenious [3] and punctual specialist researcher; strangenesses were referred to as “quirks of the intellectual” [4] [20] .
