Occupation

Born in Bilbao in an ancient Basque family. Nothing is known about his fate until 1774, when after the return of the expedition of Juan Perez , which was supposed to reach the 60th parallel, but could not sail so far to the north, the viceroy of New Spain, Antonio Maria de Bucareli y Ursua send a new expedition to explore the northwest coast of America.

The expedition sailed on March 16, 1775 from San Blas on two ships: Eseta commanded the Santiago frigate, which was accompanied by the Sonora schooner, under the command of Juan de Ayala and the San Carlos packet boat. Shortly after the start of the expedition, Ayala switched to San Carlos, whose captain fell ill, and the command of the schooner Sonora was taken over by Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Cuadra ; The expedition navigator was Francisco Morell .

Upon reaching Monterey Bay in Upper California , San Carlos set off to explore the Golden Gate , and Santiago and Sonora continued north to Punta de los Martires, where Eseta decided to return to San Blas on July 29; on the way they discovered the mouth of the Columbia River . At first, the Eseta perceived the mouth as a large bay, and tried to enter it, but the oncoming flow was so strong that the ship could not overcome it despite the full sails; then Eseta concluded that before him was either the mouth of the river or a strait connecting the two seas. He called this place “Bahia de la Asunciõn” and made a map of the area, as he saw it from the sea; Subsequently, on Spanish maps, the estuary of Colombia was often noted as the “Entrance of the Esetia” (Entrada de Hezeta). On September 8, the Eseta and Ayala courts met, and returned to San Blas together.

Subsequently, Eseta returned to Spain, fought in Europe against France and Britain, and eventually rose to lieutenant general.

Heceta Island in Alaska (in the Alexander Archipelago ), as well as Cape Heset (Heceta Head) on the Oregon coast and located on this cape, is named after the Eseta.
