Geography
The city is located on the island of Nelson , on the shores of the Bering Sea , about 25 km west of the city of Nightmute . The area of the city is 191.7 km².
History
Toksook Bay was founded in 1964 by residents of the nearby town of Nightmute. The city was incorporated on April 4, 1972 [3] . The local economy is based on fishing and other forms of subsistence farming [4] .
Population
According to the 2000 census, the population of the city was 532 people [5] . Racial Composition: Native Americans - 94.36%; whites - 2.44% and representatives of two or more races - 3.20%.
Of the 106 households, 68.9% brought up children under the age of 18, 65.1% were married couples living together, in 12.3% of families women lived without husbands, 11.3% did not have a family. 10.4% of the total number of families at the time of the census lived independently, while 0.9% were single elderly people aged 65 years and older. On average, 5.02 people conduct households, and the average family size is 5.45 people.
The proportion of people under the age of 18 is 44.0%; persons aged 18 to 24 years - 9.8%; from 25 to 44 years old - 27.4%; from 45 to 64 years old - 14.1% and persons over 65 years old - 4.7%. The average age of the population is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 118.0 males; for every 100 females age 18 and over, 124.1 males.
The average income on a joint venture is $ 30,208; the average household income is $ 32,188. The average per capita income is $ 8761. About 26.9% of families and 27.3% of the population live below the poverty line, including 37.4% of people under the age of 18 and 28.6% of people over 65.
