Group controller

A group controller is a multi-position electromechanical command device designed to turn on, turn off and switch in a given sequence of connections of an electrical circuit in order to change its configuration and properties.

According to the functional purpose, group controllers are divided into:

1) power (rheostatic / braking - changes the value of the resistances connected to the traction electric motors; the main power-commutes sections of the transformer winding on the AC EPS)

2) control (driver’s controller, driver’s controller) - in indirect control systems it sets the operation mode of power controllers and / or switches;

The main type of construction of the group controller is the cam type, which includes contactor / contact cam elements rolling on the end surfaces of the cam washers. The profile and relative position of the cam washers determines the sequence of turning on and off the cam contactors / contacts. Cam type controllers can be performed with or without extinguishing. Used for switching power and auxiliary electrical circuits with or without current.

Group controllers are operated with a manual or mechanical (pneumatic, electric) drive (for example, control controllers are driven by the muscular power of the driver (driver) through a handle or foot pedals.

Due to a certain design similarity, the group controller is often understood / accepted as a group switch , which is not technically correct from the technical point of view, although both types of group devices can even be combined.

The main scope of group controllers is the rolling stock of electric vehicles.
