Biography

The early years

Michael Andrew Gove was born on August 26, 1967 in Edinburgh ( Scotland ), was adopted at the age of four months. His father was a business in the fish processing industry in Aberdeen , his mother worked as an assistant in the laboratory of the University of Aberdeen , as well as with deaf children. As a child, Michael replaced several public and private schools [4] [5] .

He studied at the Aberdeen Independent and at the College of University of Oxford (in the last - in 1985-88 - English, graduated from it; was president of the Oxford Union). After graduation, he became a journalist — worked as a reporter in Aberdeen for The Press and Journal, as a researcher and reporter on Scottish television and as a reporter for the BBC , and then as an assistant editor for The Times [6] .

Political career

On May 5, 2005, following the results of the parliamentary elections, he was first elected to the House of Commons from the Conservative Party in the constituency. From 2005 to 2007 he was the shadow junior Minister of Housing, from 2007 to 2010 - the shadow Minister for Children, Schools and Family Affairs [7] .

Parliamentary elections were held on May 6, 2010, in which the Conservative Party won a relative majority, and on May 11, 2010, David Cameron formed a coalition government in which Gove received the portfolio of the Minister of Education [8] .

On July 15, 2014, he was appointed senior parliamentary organizer (Government Chief Whip) in the House of Commons [9] (in accordance with this appointment, he automatically received the post of parliamentary secretary of the Treasury, which gave him the right to participate in government meetings, if necessary [10] ).

On May 9, 2015, he was appointed Minister of Justice and Lord Chancellor in Cameron’s second cabinet [11] [12] .

On the eve of the referendum on UK membership in the European Union, he campaigned for leaving the EU, arguing that such a move would allow the country to become a “beacon of progress for the whole world” [13] .

On July 14, 2016, the first cabinet of Theresa May was formed, in which the portfolio of the Minister of Justice and Lord Chancellor went to Liz Truss , and Gove did not receive any position [14] .

On June 11, 2017, during the formation of the second cabinet, May received a portfolio of the Minister of the Environment, Food and Agriculture [15] .

Following the announcement of Teresa May’s resignation, he took part in the and on June 20, 2019 in the fifth round received 75 votes of parliamentarians in his support (race leader Boris Johnson was supported by 160 deputies, Jeremy Hunt - 77). He withdrew, and Hunt, together with Johnson, reached the last decisive stage in the struggle for leadership - the general vote of party members [16] .

On July 24, 2019, he was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster during the formation of the government of Boris Johnson [17] .
