Geographical position

According to the administrative territorial division of France, the commune is part of the canton of Saint-Maxim in Draguignan . The commune itself lies on the Mediterranean coast of France, in Cavalier Bay, between the communes of Saint-Tropez and Le Lavandou . In its north are the mountains of More . To Marseille in the west and to Nice in the east of Cavalier-sur-Mer - 120 kilometers. The village is located on the route of the old railway of Saint-Raphael - Toulon (sometimes called Train Pignes and now defunct). Nevertheless, the route of the old railway line is still clearly visible and the “Pignes road train” runs along its path (mostly along the coast from Le Lavandou to Saint-Raphael). The distance to the north-east Saint Tropez on the highway is 18 kilometers.

Economics

In 2010, out of 3919 people of working age (from 15 to 64 years), 2695 were economically active , 1224 were inactive (activity indicator 68.8%, in 1999 - 66.2%). Of the 2695 active able-bodied residents, 2379 people worked (1272 men and 1107 women), 316 were unemployed (135 men and 181 women). Among 1224 able-bodied inactive citizens, 254 were pupils or students , 552 were pensioners , and another 418 were inactive for other reasons [7] [8] .

The first settlement on the territory of the present commune was Phoenician, which later bore the name of Héracléa Cacabaria in Greco-Roman times. In the town of Pardigon, artifacts belonging to the Gallo-Roman era of the history of Provence were discovered.

The Cavalier-sur-Mer commune was created in 1929 by separating it from the neighboring commune of Gassin .

In 1944, during the Second World War, fierce battles took place on the territory of the commune between the Allied forces that landed here and the German units (Operation Dragoon). The main forces of the allies of the anti-Hitler coalition landed on August 15, 1944 at 8:00 in the morning. The 3rd division landed near the town of Cavalier-sur-Mer (Alpha sector), the 45th near Saint-Tropez (Betta sector), and the 36th in Frejus Bay near the city of Saint-Raphael (Camel sector ) In the first two sections, the resistance was very slight.
