Grameen America is a non-profit microfinance organization based in New York . It was founded in 2008 by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus . Grameen America provides microfinance services to women from the poorest segments of the United States , with each loan aimed at starting a small business.

History
Grameen America was founded in 2008 by pioneer of microcredit and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus and was named after his Bangladeshi project Grameen Bank [1] [2] .
Grameen America works with women who live below the poverty line. To obtain a loan, they need to unite in a group of five people and undergo financial literacy training [3] . After that, the group members receive $ 1,500 to start their own business. A Grameen America employee meets weekly with the borrower [3] .
By 2015, Grameen America issued microloans to 48,000 women for a total of $ 260 million [4] . The company has offices in all areas of New York, Omaha , Austin , Boston , San Jose and other US cities [1] .
The founder of the company, Muhammad Yunus, remains in it as the chairman of the board of directors. The executive director of Grameen America is Andrea Jung , a well-known businessman who headed Avon from 2009 to 2012 and is a member of the Apple board of directors [5] .
