Steamboat “Hannah” in Eagle, circa 1900

The area near the city of Eagle was inhabited by Native American peoples long before the Europeans came here.

The first permanent building built by Europeans in the territory of the modern settlement around 1874 was a trading post. In the 1880s, Eagle became a center of trade and support for prospectors working in the upper part of the Yukon River and its tributaries. By 1898, the population of the settlement reached 1700, which is explained by a large influx of people due to the Klondike gold rush .

In 1901, Eagle became the first incorporated city in Inner Alaska [2] . The U.S. Army Base Fort Egbert was stationed at Eagle in 1899 and operated until 1911. The telegraph line between Eagle and the city of Valdez was completed in 1903. In 1905, Roald Amundsen came to Eagle skiing and telegraphed about the results of his expedition along the Northwest Passage . The end of the Klondike gold rush led to an outflow of the population, which by 1910 had declined to about 200 people.

Almost the entire population of the modern city is represented by white Americans. At the same time, approximately half of the population of the nearby village of Eagle Village is represented by the Khan people.
