Biography
Born July 26, 1692 in the family of a rich burgher. After graduating from rural school, from 1712 he studied theology in Prague at Charles University . In Prague, he lived in a hospitable house, which was founded by two priests from Luzhitsy, Martin Norbert (1637-1707) and Georg Joseph Simon (1646-1729) for pilasters and students from Serbuli. In 1724 this house was transformed into the Lusatian Seminary . On July 25, 1718, he was ordained priest , after which he served as vicar in various Catholic parishes in Lusatia. Then he was appointed rector in the Cathedral of St. Peter in Budishin. After the death of Jan Josef Ignatz Freishlag, he was elected Dean of the Rector’s Chapter of St. Peter.
On April 4, 1743, Pope Benedict XIV appointed him Prefect of the Apostolic Prefecture of Meissen. As prefect of Meissen, he was engaged in the construction of Catholic churches and the organization of new Catholic parishes. Developed the cult of Saint Benno . In 1746, designed by Italian artist Stefano Torelli at the expense of the Italian merchant Francesco Komolo, he built an altar in the name of St. Benno in the Cathedral of St. Peter.
Cared about the formation of the Serbian people. He built numerous schools in Serbiani villages in the vicinity of Budishin.
On May 9, 1753, Pope Benedict XIV appointed him titular Bishop of Pergamum . On June 24, 1753, he was ordained a bishop in Prague. I received from the emperor Franz I Stefan the noble title "von Berenstamm" with his own coat of arms.
