Biography
Alexander Dombrovsky was born on December 6 (19), 1895 in the city of Melitopol, Zaporizhzhya region of Ukraine . After graduating externally from the Moscow 11th Gymnasium (1914) [1] he studied at the medical faculty of Yuryev University (1914-1919). Returning to Russia, he passed exams for a doctor’s degree at Don University (1920) and received the right to practice medicine.
He worked as a resident of Don University , served in the Red Army as a hospital doctor. In 1925, in Rostov-on-Don, he headed the Physiotherapy Institute, then became an assistant radiologist at Don University and at the same time headed the X-ray room of the city hospital. In 1934 he became an assistant at the Rostov Medical Institute and became a candidate of sciences, associate professor, and a few years later he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences (1937). He was elected head. Department of Radiology and Radiology and was soon awarded the title of professor (1939). [2] .
During the Great Patriotic War he served in evacuation hospitals in Rostov, Aktyubinsk , Tomsk and headed the department of Tomsk University .
After treatment in the hospital, he returned to Rostov to his pre-war place of work and took his previous position. Without leaving her, he became director (1946), and then deputy. Director of Science of the newfound Rostov Regional Radiological and Oncological Institute.
When an anti-Semitic campaign was launched in the USSR in connection with the Doctors' Case , A. I. Dombrovsky was accused of “ cosmopolitanism ”, “nepotism”, the use of “harmful methods of diagnosis and treatment”, etc. [3] and lost their jobs. The corresponding decision of the Academic Council of the Rostov Medical Institute was adopted on April 2, 1953. But two days later, Pravda announced the termination of the fabricated “Pest Doctors' Case”. In this regard, A. I. Dombrovsky is called the “last person involved” in this case [4] . Soon Dombrovsky was reinstated at work, and he headed the department until the end of his life.

- Sister - Maria Iosifovna Dombrovskaya (1897—?), Head of the clinical laboratory of the Rostov Cancer Institute (1946-1956). [6] .
- Wife - Ida Abramovna Dombrovskaya, ophthalmologist.
- Daughter - Elena Alexandrovna Dombrovskaya (1926-2014), pathologist, doctor of medical sciences, professor.
- Son - Joseph Alexandrovich Dombrovsky (1924-1962), the head of the medical unit of the Rostov airport , died in a plane crash .
- Grandchildren - Victor I. Dombrovsky (1950—2019), Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor; Yuri Anatolyevich Dombrovsky (born 1949), professor, laureate of the USSR State Prize, specialist in the field of mathematical ecology.
Scientific activity
The professional interests of A. I. Dombrovsky were associated with a wide range of issues of radiology and radiology - prevention, diagnosis, therapy, the influence of X-rays and radiation on the body, etc. The results of his research and practical developments are important for cardiology , angiology , oncology . Since 1927 , he has published over 70 scientific papers in Russian, French, German and English (including six monographs) and has won a number of copyright certificates.
Under his scientific supervision, 2 doctoral and 27 master's theses were completed and defended. He created (1937) and until the end of his life he headed the Rostov Society of Radiologists and Radiologists, was deputy. Chairman of the All-Russian Society of Radiologists and Radiologists, member of the editorial board of the journal "Bulletin of Radiology and Radiology."
The chief radiologist of Rostov-on-Don V.V. Kovalerchuk recalled:
The professor has always been an example for us of disinterestedness, spirituality, nobility, scientific uncompromisingness. He conveyed decency, human and professional culture, ability to work and endless devotion to the radiological service to his students [7]
