Biography

Born March 23, 1820 in a puddle village of Komorov near Budishin in a peasant family. From 1835 to 1842 he studied at the gymnasium in Budishin. During training, he was one of the founders of the student fraternity Societas Slavica Budissinensis. From 1842 to 1845 he studied theology in Leipzig . After training, he was ordained a priest. From 1846 to 1849 he was vicar in the Lutheran parish in Delny Vuyezd . In 1847, he was one of the founders of the Serbluzhitsky cultural and educational organization “ Matica Serbs”. He signed the constituent appeal of Wulku próstwu Serbow. In 1849 he was appointed rector . From 1887 to 1897 he was editor of the Lutheran magazine Misionski Posol. He held this position until his retirement in 1892.

During the revolution of 1848 adhered to liberal views. He published his articles in the newspaper Tydźenska Nowina, which was published by Jan Arnost Smoler .

In 1882 he published in the literary magazine Łužica under the pseudonym Šyman the autobiographical novel Bratřik a sotřička (Brother and sister).

He wrote the poem “Naše serbstwo z procha stawa” (Our Serb from the dust will rise), which was often used among the inhabitants of Luzhsk as an unofficial anthem during the Nazi regime.

He died on June 7, 1897 in the Serbluzhik village of Ketlitsy.
