History

Built in the XV century in honor of the victory over the Tatar troops. It happened at this place on July 20, the day of remembrance of Elijah the Prophet. According to the annals, the first mention of the temple dates back to 1476. The church was in the village of Vorontsovo, in a pine forest. At the end of the XV century, Ivan III built a suburban palace here, because the church has the status of a court. At the beginning of the 16th century, the church passed to Vasily III . March 25, Vasily celebrated his birthday, and this date coincided with the feast of the Annunciation, after which he built a stone church of the Annunciation near the temple. It was built from 1514 to 1516 by the Italian architect Aleviz. After 1525, Vasily did not attend the church, because the temple became a parish [2] .

In the summer of 1653, drought occurred in Moscow, the inhabitants were afraid. Alexei Mikhailovich said that he would build a church in honor of the saint, on the day of which it would rain. When it began to rain on July 20, 1653, Alexei arranged a new one on the site of the old church in the name of Elijah on the Vorontsov Field. The Ilyinsky limit is attached. At the beginning of the XVIII century the Church of the Annunciation was destroyed. It was replaced by a five- baroque temple. In the middle of the same century, a bell tower was built at the level of the "red line", it was dismantled during the USSR. In the XIX century, the church was twice rebuilt [2] .

In 1929, the temple was closed, it housed the Museum of Oriental Art . In the XXI century, the church has a storage facility [2] .

I. Khludov [2] . In the years 1876-1878. architect P.P. Zykov attached a refectory and a bell tower to the church (which has now been lost). After the closure of the temple in 1929, the Museum of Oriental Art was located here, at which the temple was rebuilt again for the needs of the museum.
