Overview
Despite taking Tampo Bay Lightning second place in the regular season, very few people considered Lightning as candidates for victory in the playoffs . Lightning won the Stanley Cup for the first time in its history.
Led by captain Dave Andreichuk , forwards by Martin San-Louis , Vincent Lecavalier , Brad Richards and reliably playing goalkeeper Nikolai Khabibulin , Lightning beat the initial stages of the Islanders and Montreal , then in the final of the game in seven matches. and in the final, also in seven fights, they beat Calgary Flames .
Helped Tampa and Ruslan Fedotenko - during the regular season, the Ukrainian striker scored only 17 goals in 77 matches, while in the playoffs he had 12 goals in 22 games, including two goals in the decisive seventh final match.
The owner of Conn Smythe Trophy was Richards , who scored the most points in the playoffs - 23 (12 + 11), and his seven heads were victorious for Lightning, which became the new NHL record.
“ Calgary ” played the role of “Cinderella”, hitting the playoffs after victories over the stronger and more experienced “ Vancouver ”, “ Detroit ” and “ San Jose ”. Flames' main weapon in the 2004 playoffs was striker Jerome Iginla and Finnish goalkeeper Mika Kiprusoff .
