Biography
Born on September 8, 1924 in Moscow in the family of the geographer Mikhail Iosifovich Galitsky (1896-1970).
Upon graduation, Victor Galitsky went to the front of World War II , was a participant in the battles on the Kursk Bulge as commander of an artillery platoon. As a result of a severe wound, he was demobilized in 1943 and entered the Moscow Aviation Institute . In 1946 he moved to the Engineering Physics Department of the Moscow Mechanical Institute (from 1953 - the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute ), which he graduated in 1949.
After graduating from the institute, in 1949, Galitsky worked in Laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1956 - the Institute of Atomic Energy, since 1960 - the Institute named after I.V. Kurchatov). At the same time since 1948, working at MEPhI, in 1960 he moved there to permanent work; In 1965-1971 he was a professor, the head of the Department of Theoretical Nuclear Physics, Moscow Engineering Physics Institute. From 1971 until the end of his life - he again worked at the Institute. I.V. Kurchatova, being since 1974 the director of the Department of General and Nuclear Physics.
In addition to his professional activities, V. M. Galitsky was engaged in the popularization of science; for more than 10 years he was deputy chief editor of the journal Nature .
He lived in Moscow in the 3rd Shchukinsky alley, 3 (now - Marshal Vasilevsky street, 1, building 2) and on Marshal Biryuzov street, 38. He died on January 7, 1981 in Moscow.
The grandson and full namesake of V.M. Galitsky - the famous theoretical physicist Victor Galitski ( en ), works as a Professor at the Quantum Institute of the University of Maryland in the USA.
