Born into a wealthy family, but orphaned early. In his youth he went to Deventer , where he was educated at the Geghius school, in 1486 he entered the University of Erfurt , in 1488 he received a bachelor's degree there, and in 1492 a master's degree. From 1496 to 1502 he lived in Italy, where he went from Mainz and where he studied law; in 1498 he received a doctorate in canon law in Bologna ; he also studied law in Padua , Florence , Venice and Rome ; during his life in Italy he made acquaintance with many Italian humanists and at the same time became interested in the ideas of Neoplatonism . In 1502 he returned to Germany, lived for a short time in Hesse , in 1504 became a canon in Gotha, where he lived in modest material conditions and soon began to criticize the existing church hierarchy. In 1505, he founded a literary circle together with other local humanists.
In principle, he did not publish his essays for wider circles, but was considered one of the most versatile scholars of his time and enjoyed great influence as the head of the union of humanists, to which Eoban Hess , Krot Rubian , Jonas, Justus and others belonged. During the Reichlin debate , the famous “ Letters of Dark People ” ( lat. Epistolae obscurorum virorum ) came out of this circle, but Mutsin appeared in the dispute, already hesitating between the parties.
He was known for his extensive knowledge in the field of ancient literature and as a philosopher sought to reconcile ancient philosophy and Christian theology . Like Erasmus of Rotterdam , he gradually moved away from the Reformation , although in a number of sources it is called one of its "forerunners". Died in need, impoverished during the peasant riots.
