Biography
Born in Revel [2] ; ethnic german. He studied medicine and received his doctorate at the University of Gottingen in 1755 for his thesis: “ De partu praeternaturali, quem sine matris aut foetus sectione absolvere non licet operatori ”. In 1755-1756 he improved his skills in obstetrics in Berlin and Strasbourg [3] . At the end of 1756 he returned to Russia [3] and, having passed the exam, in 1757 received the right to practice in Russia [2] [4] . On April 7, 1757, on the initiative of P.Z. Kondoidi, he was determined “to be a woman’s business”: he taught at a school for midwives in St. Petersburg in a professorship with a salary of 600 rubles a year [2] [3] [4] [5] . Since 1759 he was obliged to give lectures in Russian, but did not know the Russian language, his lectures were translated by the head physician Jacob von Mellen [2] [4] .
On November 27, 1763, he became a member of the Medical College [2] [4] , the only obstetrician in it (and, therefore, the country's highest examiner for obstetricians), while he almost stopped giving lectures at the obstetric school [6] .
In April 1776 he participated in attempts by doctors to save Grand Duchess Natalya Alekseevna , the first wife of Pavel Petrovich (future emperor), who died in labor on April 15, 1776.
He was dismissed from the college in 1781 [2] [6] and, having received the rank of state councilor, was appointed a doctor in the St. Petersburg Opened House [2] .
