History

In the era of the Warring States, Yuezhi lived in these places, then the Huns replaced them. During the time of the Han empire, under the emperor Wu-di Huns, they were defeated, and these lands became part of the Han empire, the territory of the modern county of Yongchang was part of four counties of two districts. By the time of the Tang empire, almost the entire territory was part of Panhe County (番 禾 县), which in 744 was renamed Tianbao County (天宝 县).

During the Mongol Empire, the Yuan in 1272, a fortification was built in these places, which became the location of a structure called the Yunchian Government (永昌 府); this structure controlled the territory that became Yongchang Province (永昌 路).

After the overthrow of the power of the Mongols and the establishment of the Ming empire, the Yunchansky guard (永昌 卫) was created in 1370. Under the Qing Empire, in 1724, military structures were replaced by civilian ones, and the Yunchang guard was transformed into Yongchang County.

In 1949, the Wuwei Special Area (武威 专区) was created, and these lands became part of it. In 1955, the Jiuquan Special Region (酒泉 专区) and the Wuwei Special Region were merged into the Zhangye Special Region (张掖 专区), but in 1961, the Wuwei Special Region was recreated. In 1970, Wuwei Special District was renamed Wuwei County (武威 地区).

In 1982, the Jinchang City District was formed, consisting of Yongchang County and the City District. In 1984, the urban area was transformed into the Jinchuan area.
