He graduated from high school in Coburg , from 1847 he studied law in Jena and Erlangen , where he received his doctorate. After completing his studies and passing the qualification exam, from 1852 he was a lawyer in Coburg. Soon he decided to move to Berlin, but in 1853, having chosen a career as a teacher, he began teaching the law at the University of Halle as a private assistant professor (having rehabilitated at the same institution the same year), in 1856 he became an extraordinary professor in Königsberg , from 1863 - An ordinary professor in Rostock , and in 1872 he moved to the same rank to teach at the University of Jena. He was distinguished by conservative and religious views, in 1856-1863 he actively participated in the socio-political life of Prussia, subsequently moving away from active activities in this direction, although he strongly supported the formation of the German Empire . Throughout his life he was twice married, in 1873 he survived the death of his son, which negatively affected his health, and he soon suffered a stroke , from which he could not recover. Died of pulmonary edema .
He was known as a major legal scholar, the main topics of his research were Roman and (later in life) medieval German law. Major works: Die Ersitzung der Servituten (Erlangen, 1852), Zur Lehre von der römischen Actio (1857); “Die Gewissensvertretung im gemeinen deutschen Recht” (1860), “Aus dem Universitäts- und Gelehrnenleben im Zeitalter der Reformation” (Erlangen, 1866), “Römisches und Kanonisches Recht im deutschen Mittelalter” (Rostock, 1871) -kanonischen Prozesses in Deutschlan "d (1872)," Zur Geschichte der Rechtswissenschaft und der Universitäten in Deutschland "(Jena, 1876).
