Biography

In 1704, of his own free will, he went to study in England . Here he expressed a desire to enlist in the English fleet . To his request about this, he received a letter from his father in which he informed that the sovereign had learned of his desire: "with much mercy, he deigned to praise him for not paying his beloved state affairs and drinking your Hungarian cup for your health."

In 1712, Zotov returned to Russia and was immediately promoted to lieutenant . He sailed under the command of Naum Senyavin , fully justifying the sovereign's expectations with his knowledge and practice. The following year he participated in a naval campaign in the Gulf of Finland .

In 1715 , promoted to lieutenant commander , Zotov was sent to France to study the organization of the French fleet and the management of the Admiralty. Here he performed a wide variety of assignments. In 1716, he unsuccessfully intervened in political negotiations on the marriage of Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich and, at the same time, opposed Lefort , who was bothering about setting up a privileged company in France to trade with Russia , insisted on the benefits of free trade.

Upon his return from France, Zotov was promoted to captain of the 3rd rank and commanded large ships. In 1719, Zotov participated in the naval battle of Senyavin with the Swedish squadron and captured the Swedish frigate , for which he was promoted to captain of the 2nd rank.

Well educated, with literary abilities and knowledge of several foreign languages, Zotov was involved in the preparation of Peter the naval charter and regulations, and he himself compiled a number of regulations and staff of the fleet. Paying particular attention to Peter during these works, he was appointed in 1721 to be a controller at the Admiralty College.

In 1724, Zotov presented the sovereign the first Russian original book on naval tactics and practice, “Conversation with the admiral with the captain about the team or the complete teaching of how to control the ship in all kinds of different cases” (St. Petersburg, 1724 , reprinted in 1816 ), where the form of questions and answers set out the necessary information on maritime issues, navigation, the life volleys of the ship, etc. The next work was the book "Pursuit of the enemy."

After Peter's death, he commanded the battleship Panteleimon-Victoria and in 1726 drew up the rules of the Admiralty Lower Court (commercial maritime charter).

In 1738, he transferred the Dutch 1st Baltic Sea fleet with a detailed atlas of this sea under the name "Lamp of the Sea" and dedicated to the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna . Later he was chief-crewmaster and crew -general (1740).
