Air Invasion

Air intrusion is a term for capturing the live broadcast of radio and television broadcasting . Most intrusions occur during the broadcast of local television and radio channels, as well as on paid cable channels and in national television networks by transmitting a signal of a greater power, which drowns out the transmitted broadcast.

Despite the fact that intrusions into live broadcasts of local, as well as cable and satellite television broadcasting are constantly discussed in the media, the most common victims of hacking are usually local radio stations, since many of them simply relay the signal received from another radio transmitter. To do this, you need an FM transmitter with a higher power, which drowns out the signal coming from the studio. Other ether capture methods that have been used in the United States include spoofing a broadcast signal and outputting sound directly to the air.

As for the invasion of live cable television, the transmitted signal is connected by operators between individual stations and subscribers. Broadcasting corporations are constantly reporting attempts to interfere with their live broadcasts.

Punishment for violations

USA

In the United States, illegal air intrusion is considered a criminal offense . The United States Federal Communications Commission has imposed a fine of $ 100,000 to $ 250,000 or imprisonment for up to 10 years in a maximum security penal colony .

Russia

The creation of artificial interference that impedes the reliable reception of radio, television programs, that is, the propagation of radio, television and other technical signals in the frequency band in which broadcasting under license is carried out, entails liability in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation.

- Article 33 of the Law of the Russian Federation of 12.27.1991 No. 2124-1 “On the Mass Media” [1]

In Russia, such actions are considered an administrative offense [2] , entailing the imposition of an administrative fine on citizens in the amount of five hundred rubles to one thousand rubles; for officials - from one thousand to two thousand rubles; for legal entities - from ten thousand to twenty thousand rubles.

Known cases of air intrusion

Vrillon

November 26, 1977 in the UK there was one of the first incursions on the air. During the next news release on Southern Television, relaying ITN , the beep suddenly disappeared. A few seconds later, an appeal was made to humanity on behalf of the aliens. The IBA claims that this was the first hack to broadcast on the air to play the audience.

Captain Incident Midnight

On April 27, 1986 at 12:32 in one of the New York suburbs, the HBO cable channel was interrupted by a text message against the background of a tuning table from a certain Captain Midnight ( Rus. Captain Midnight ), where he expressed his dissatisfaction with the high cost of the channel - 12.95 dollars a month. The capture of the air took place during the screening of the film " Agents Falcon and Snowman " and lasted about 2 minutes [3] , after which the show resumed. The person who interrupted the broadcast and planned to repeat the takeover on Showtime and The Movie Channel was later identified as John R. MacDougall from Ocala , Florida . McDuggle was found guilty and sentenced to a fine of $ 5,000, as well as 1 year in a penal colony.

Max Hedrum Incident

The Max Hedrum incident on November 22, 1987 in Chicago was the most famous incident of air raid. The news about this incident was discussed by all central newspapers, radio stations and television channels.

The first victim was the WGN television channel: at 21:14 local time, the broadcast of sports news was interrupted. The screen darkened for 10 seconds, and over the next 10 seconds a video was shown with an unknown person in a mask of Max Hedrum wearing glasses against the background of rotating walls of corrugated iron. After the invasion, the host expressed his surprise: “If you want to know what happened now, then so will I.”

At 11:15 p.m., the seizure was repeated on the WTTW channel during the show of the next episode of the Doctor Who television series, but this time the sound quality was higher and the video lasted 90 seconds. In the video, the cracker laughs, sings, says a meaningless set of phrases, shows his middle finger and throws a can of Coca-Cola into the camera twice. At the end of the video, a woman appears who spanks the unknown on the bare buttocks with a fly swatter.

An attacker who hacked the air has not yet been found. Presumably, he is a former or current employee of a television company, since the capture of air requires expensive equipment and technical knowledge about the installation of television.

It was this invasion of the air that became the prototype for the appearance in YouTube in 2007 of the most famous video fake called “Wyoming incident” or “333-333-333”.

Other TV

In September 1987, the erotic channel Playboy TV became a victim of a live broadcast: during the broadcast, a text appeared on the channel urging all citizens to stop watching the channel, repent and believe in Jesus Christ . The cracker was Thomas Haney, who carried it out on the order of CBN [4] [5] .

In September 1985, in Poland , in the city of Torun, four students of the University of Nicholas Copernicus , using a computer and synchronizing circuits, invaded Polish television during the broadcast of the series “Report 07” and replaced the broadcast of the series with a text urging all citizens to boycott the election [6] [7] .

In 2006, the Al-Manar Channel fell prey to opponents of the Hezbollah party. The air showed the face of Hassan Nasrallah against a background of firearms and a voice message: “Your day has come!” [8] .

In January 2007, in Australia, during the broadcast of the Crash Investigation series on Seven Network, a strange voice unexpectedly interrupted the sound broadcast, saying with an American accent: “Lord Jesus Christ, help us all!” The voice was repeated for 6 minutes while the series was on. A Seven Network spokesman claimed that someone was jokingly unsuccessful. It was later discovered that the voice was cut from a news release about an explosive truck ambushed in Iraq [9] [10] .

In the same year, on June 17, in the Czech Republic , a Panorama broadcast on the 2nd channel of Czech television , which broadcasted a view of Czech cities, was shown a nuclear explosion [11] . The audience panicked. As it turned out later, the hacking was organized by the Ztohoven community, which had already committed similar incidents, but they were not related to television [12] .

Often, hackers, cracking the ethers of cable channels, launched pornographic videos into it. For example, in 2009 in Tucson, a live broadcast of a sports match on the KVOA channel was interrupted by an excerpt from the movie “Wild Cherries 5” [13] [14] [15] . In 2007, in New Jersey, the satellite operator Compast, during the broadcast of the children's animated series Handy Manny on Disney, accidentally launched an excerpt of a perverted porn movie [16] [17] , and 5 years later it repeated on the same channel but with a different satellite operator and during the screening of the animated series Lilo and Stitch [18] . In April of that year, in Hamilton, on the CHCH TV channel, during a morning news broadcast, hackers launched homosexual porn [19] [20] . On April 13, 2013, on the BelMuzTV television channel, first one of the videos of the Lyapis Trubetskoy band banned in Belarus was shown, and then a pornographic video was shown. The 28-year-old video engineer of the channel was found guilty of this, he explained this as “stress after breaking up with the girl.” Later, in August of that year, he received 6 years in prison. [21]

On June 13, 2007, an incident occurred in Washington . A mysterious photograph of an unknown man and woman was broadcast on ABC for two hours. However, channel officials claimed that this was not an invasion of the air, but a problem with the advertising of the Oprah Winfrey Show [22] .

In February 2013, in the city of Great Falls, on the KRTV channel, hackers broadcast a message that zombies were rising from the graves [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] [28] .

On July 31, 2013, an excerpt from the documentary film Russia: The Epoch of Putin unexpectedly was launched on the Vostochny Express TV channel (a network partner of Domashny TV channel in Chelyabinsk) during a news broadcast. The cracker, director of the Chelyabinsk television channel Diy Lebedev, was fired on the same day [29] [30] [31] .

In the 70s, local British radio stations were often attacked by hooligan radio amateurs from the USSR , who interrupted local broadcasts with their own, which were called Radio Corn, Green Goat or Fortune [32] .
