Biography

Kurban-Ali Akhmetov was born on April 4, 1955 [4] . It is an ethnic Uzbek [2] from the Urtachirchik district of Tashkent region [4] . A citizen of the Republic of Uzbekistan [1] .

He studied at Miri Arab Madrasah in Bukhara [2] . After the collapse of the USSR, it began to distribute its tariff in southern and northwestern Kazakhstan ( Shymkent , Taraz , Aktobe ), as well as in the regions of Russia with the Tatar population ( Orsk ) [5] . He was deputy imam of the Ubay ibn Kaab mosque (since 1992) in the Parkent district of the Tashkent region [4] . Since 1994, he lived in Kazakhstan and Russia. In 1996, Kurban-Ali began appearing on television in Kazakhstan (with complete disregard from the Uzbek media) and preaching Sufism [5] .

In 1998, the National Security Committee of Kazakhstan revealed the activities of the radical Islamic community in Kyzylorda , whose leader was Kurban-Ali Akhmetov. The community center was the village of Shirkeyli in the Kyzylorda region, where many feasts from neighboring Uzbekistan came to preach. In total, about a hundred residents of the southern regions of Kazakhstan consisted of the Tariqatshylar community of Naqshbandi. No special measures were taken against the followers of Kurban-Ali, with the exception of an official warning from the authorities, and Kurban-Ali himself was expelled to Uzbekistan [2] .

In 1999, Kurban-Ali Akhmetov was detained already in Uzbekistan, in the village of Karakalpak in the Tashkent region. During a search in his house, they found leaflets of the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami party in Uzbekistan. First, Kurban-Ali was sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest, then, in 2000, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison (article 159 part 3, paragraph “b” and article 244-1 part 3 paragraph “a” of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan). After considering the cassation appeal, the term of imprisonment was reduced to 3 years, and in 2001 Kurban-Ali Akhmetov was amnestied and released [4] .

According to the latest data, the activities of Kurban-Ali Akhmetov are most active in the Kazakh city of Taraz , where he founded the organization “Islam Shapagaty” [2] (full name “Educational Society of Islam Shapagaty (Shafagatul Islam)”). The religious association publishes the newspaper “Khazholy” ( Russian: The Way of Truth ) in Kazakh and Russian.

Religious Activities and Ideology

Kurban Ali is a follower of the Naqshbandi Sheikh Ibrahimjan Mamatkulov ( Hazrat Ibrahim , Uzbek. Ibrohimjon Mamatqulov , 1937-2009) from Kokand . It belongs to the Mujaddidiya-Husainiya, the sheikhs of which lead their spiritual chain of succession from the Indian theologian Ahmad Sirhindi ( Imam Rabbani , 1564-1624), the author of the famous work Maktubat, and the Naqshbandi Sheikh Muhammad Husayn from Bukhara (d. 1833 or 18). [5] . Mujaddidiya-Husainiya is one of the rare Naqshbandi lines that survived under Soviet rule. After the collapse of the USSR, representatives of this movement became the largest among the Naqshbandites in Uzbekistan - by the end of the 1990s, Ibrahimjan Mamatkulov had about a thousand murids (students) , and the number of ordinary admirers (muhlis) was much larger [6] . In addition, Kurban-Ali took the Yasavian teaching to gain authority [7] .

During the life of Sheikh Ibrahimjan Kurban-Ali Akhmetov was the second most important person in the tariqah [2] , but after his death in 2009, there was a split among the leaders of Kazakhstan’s Naqshbandites in the person of Kurban-Ali and Nasr ad-din-ishan. Both began to claim the title of ishan [8] . Now Kurban-Ali is a "caliph" of the South Kazakhstan and Zhambyl regions of Kazakhstan [8] .

Family

According to the Memorial organization, he is married and has 5 children [4] . In addition to his official wife (polygamy is not allowed in Kazakhstan), he has three more wives [8] . The number of children from them is unknown.
