Biography

He was born on February 12 ( February 24, according to a new style) in 1871 in Moscow (the birthday is marked on the tombstone on February 25 [1] ) in the family of a teacher of a female gymnasium.

After graduating from the 5th Moscow Grammar School in 1891, he entered the natural department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University . After graduating from university in 1895, he was left in it to prepare for a professorship. He was a student of famous Russian botanists - professors I. N. Gorozhankin , academician K. A. Timiryazev , physiologist I. M. Sechenov and physicist A. G. Stoletov . Since 1897, he worked at the Bologovsky Biological Station of the St. Petersburg Imperial Society of Naturalists.

In 1901, Ivanov defended his master's thesis on “Observations of the aquatic vegetation of the lake region”, in 1906 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Transformation of phosphorus in a plant due to protein transformations”. Repeatedly traveling abroad to improve in the field of physical chemistry and plant physiology, he mastered German, French and English. Before the October Revolution, Ivanov had the rank of state adviser , was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 2nd and 3rd degrees, as well as a medal in memory of the 300th anniversary of the reign of the Romanov dynasty. From 1897 to 1941, Leonid Alexandrovich worked at the St. Petersburg Forestry Institute (from 1925 - the Leningrad Forestry Engineering Academy ): full-time assistant at the Department of Botany, an extraordinary and ordinary professor, and head of the department. In 1912-1916, he held the post of assistant director in it, and in 1917-1918 - the director of the institute. In 1922 he was elected a corresponding member of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1939-1947 he headed the laboratory of photosynthesis at the Institute of Plant Physiology of the USSR Academy of Sciences, from 1947 to 1958 - the laboratory of tree ecology of the Institute of Forest of the USSR Academy of Sciences, from 1958 to 1962 he worked as a senior researcher at the Forestry Laboratory of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists, a founding member of the Russian Botanical Society and a member of the German Botanical Society in Berlin (since 1923).

He died on April 11, 1962 in Moscow. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery (4th section, 39th row). [one]
