Biography
Quite a bit is known about the biography of Federico Pagano. He was the son of Nicolo Pagano, who participated in the fortification of the Kaffa Genoese colony in Crimea. Federico was supposedly born in Genoa around 1315 , his family came from the village of San Michele di Pagana, in the vicinity of Rapallo .
From his youth, Pagano was engaged in trade. At the age of 25, he was among the voters of the first Doge Simon Boccanegra. The beginning of a career in politics for him was the appointment of an ambassador to several courts of the Italian duchies, including Visconti , as well as special envoy in Vienna at the court of Charles IV of Luxembourg.
Almost unanimously, Pagano was elected April 7, 1383 as the new Doge of Genoa, but his rule did not last a day, since he was overthrown on the same day. An experienced and insightful politician Leonardo Montaldo was able to cancel the election and hold his appointment as a new doge. After this episode, Federico Pagano forever disappears from the front line of Genoese politics. He died in Genoa in 1406 and was buried in the church of San Domenico.
