Biography
Born in the family of a lawyer from Clermont. In his youth he visited Italy and England, then he was a clerk of the Paris Parliament. Member of the Paris Parliament since 1584. Enjoyed significant political influence during the end of the Religious War (1562-1598) in France. In 1593 he voiced the opportunity for Henry IV to receive the French crown if he adopted Catholicism. He later performed diplomatic missions in England, was chairman of the Parliament and governor of Provence for 20 years, from 1596 to 1616. Since 1617 and almost until his death in August 1621 - Count, Bishop Lisieux in Normandy.
G. du Vair was the author of numerous essays in which he tried to connect the Christian religion with ancient Stoicism . The works of du Vair, distinguished by clarity of presentation and good artistic style, influenced the worldview of such eminent French philosophers as René Descartes and Pascal Blaise . In 1593 he wrote a dialogue, “De la constance et consolation des calamités publiques”, on the topic of the Christian faith in difficult conditions of need and misfortune. Also created an essay on the state of the French language.
G. du Vair was a close friend of the French poet Francois de Malerba .
