Biography
Born in the family of a priest who served for many years in Divosha. He finished elementary school in his native village, then studied at the St. Sava Seminary in Sremski Karlovtsy [1] .
After graduating from the Theological Seminary, he was an employee of the court of the Belgrade-Karlovac Archdiocese, and after the deacon’s ordination on June 8, 1939 [1] , he was the secretary of the same court. He graduated from the Theological Faculty of the University of Belgrade .
As one of the best connoisseurs of Serbian folk church singing, he was appointed a singing teacher at St. Sava Seminary in Belgrade.
In 1951 he was elected secretary of the Holy Synod, but did not stay in that capacity for long.
On August 19, 1955 he was ordained to the rank of presbyter [1] and elevated to the rank of archpriest with the appointment to the parish in Trieste .
He did not stay long in Trieste because of the situation that had developed at that time in this church-school community, and went to the parish in Windsor , Canada , where he served until his election as bishop.
On May 11, 1963, by a decision of the Council of Bishops, he was appointed bishop of the newly-established East American and Canadian Diocese [1] .
On July 13 of that year, at the Temple of St. Elijah in Alikvipi, Pennsylvania , his bishop consecration [1] took place, performed by Bishop Branichevsky Chrysostom (Voinovich) and Bishop Banatsky Vissarion (Kostich) . He became the first Serbian bishop ordained in the United States [3] .
A few months before his death, the headquarters of the Eastern American and Canadian Diocese was moved from Claireton , PA to Cleveland , Ohio.
Died May 10, 1966 in Cleveland. He was buried at the Holy Ilyinsky Serbian Orthodox cemetery in Alikvipi [3] .
Musical activity
A gifted singer ( dramatic baritone ), with a personal style in liturgical singing, extremely musical, he began to engage in melographic work and decided to publish the Osmoglasnik (1951). Working on it, he wrote in the introduction:
Starao himself, let’s speed up the melodicas of Naglasak and Naglask of the French language, but not for the price, pa and for the price yes, bend the voice character. The stacks of the place where the Osmoglasniku had his oceans, where, for no reason, the melodisk of the line could have been approved.
Festive singing in two volumes was published by the East American and Canadian Diocese as amended by Professor Vojislav Ilic (1969). According to the notes of Bishop Stephen, Professor Ilic harmonized for the choir all three articles, which were also published by the Eastern American and Canadian Diocese.
