Anti-plagiarism

Antiplagiat ( Antiplagiat.ru ) is a Russian Internet project, a hardware and software system for checking text documents for borrowing from open sources on the Internet and other sources. The project is available both for ordinary users and (in a special version) for higher education institutions . The use of the system was recommended by the Council for the Coordination of Quality Management of Vocational Education under Rosobrnadzor as an automated means of combating plagiarism for improving internal quality control of individual students' work, as well as in the framework of introducing a standard model of the quality system of an educational institution [3] . The system for detecting illegal borrowings (the so-called Anti-Plagiarism program) has nothing to do with either the Russian Ministry of Education or the Higher Attestation Commission: it was developed on an initiative basis; any certification or accreditation under the Ministry or the Higher Attestation Commission did not pass [4] [5] . The use of such programs is carried out by citizens or organizations independently, the issue of paid use is established by copyright holders - private individuals [5]. The copyright holder for the use of the combined anti-plagiarism trademark is Anti-Plagiarism Closed Joint-Stock Company [6] .

Using the service

The service is provided to any registered visitor to the site antiplagiat.ru free of charge with limited functionality or on a paid basis with advanced functionality (on the principle of freemium ).

The service also implements the package “Anti-plagiarism. University, ”allowing higher education institutions to deploy a system to test students' work. At the end of March 2013, among the subscribers of the service were 163 universities [7] and academic structures, among which the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Higher School of Economics , as well as the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation and the Russian State Library [8] . Antiplagiarism checks about one hundred thousand documents per day.

Project History

The project website was opened in September 2005 . The Antiplagiarism system was developed by Forecsys [9] .

In 2006, the Anti-Plagiarism project was recognized as the winner of the Fifth Competition of Russian Innovations in one of the nominations, and was also awarded with special certificates from the Higher Attestation Commission and the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications of the Russian Federation . In this regard, in 2006 the project received wide coverage in the press and on television (see links).

In June 2007, the use of the system was recommended to Russian universities by the Quality Council under Rosobrnadzor. A month later, the system “Anti-plagiarism. Higher Attestation Commission ”was deployed to the Higher Attestation Commission of Russia.

At a company press conference in May 2013, a study was announced that Antiplagiarism is conducting under the order of the RSL, which will test all dissertations of historical specialization. However, the study, according to the company's executive director Yuri Chekhovich, will be anonymous and will pursue more scientific goals - to study the situation as a whole in Russian science and improve the system algorithm [10] . Then the draft order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation was issued, which obliged universities to check graduate diplomas for plagiarism [11] .

Technology

The analysis of works is carried out on the basis of a specialized system for searching and processing information [12] , developed with the participation of Russian mathematicians.

The system offers a set of services that together implement the technology for determining borrowings from publicly available network sources, specialized collections of documents, electronic libraries, etc. In fact, the service is a specialized search system .

The system collects information from various sources: it downloads from the Internet and processes sites that are in the public domain, databases of scientific articles and abstracts . Downloaded documents undergo a filtering procedure, which results in discarding useless (in terms of potential citation ) information.

At the next stage, each of the texts thus obtained is formatted in a certain way and entered into the system database . In addition, documents uploaded for verification by the user are received in the general text base, if such an opportunity was allowed by him during the upload procedure.

All user documents uploaded for verification are queued for processing. Verification of a document, such as, for example, an abstract of medium size, takes a few seconds.

After checking the document, the user gets access to the report in which the results are presented. The structure of the full report (available only in the paid version) allows you to select borrowed parts in the text being checked both by all sources and by any subset of them .

Criticism

The use of the Anti-Plagiarism program (and others like it) provokes a number of criticisms. In particular:

  • Issued topics are repeated annually. Each work is laid out in the public domain. Currently, the number of written works posted on the Internet cannot be counted. Accordingly, it becomes more and more difficult to write a unique work every year. [13] [14] [15]
  • The percentage of text perceived by the program as “original” is reduced when using laws and regulations. The verification system will consider them plagiarism. Many phrases, well-established sentences, logically verified and correctly constructed expressions also fail the test, [16]
  • A formal approach to verification, in which “originality” is understood to mean only a fraction of the text on the basis of an absence on the Internet, regardless of the content of the work. [17] [18] [19]
  • The corruption component of the application of the program, as well as political blackmail. [20] [21] [22]
  • Bureaucratization of the verification process: specialized units are created in universities for this. Accordingly, the student, while working on a term paper or diploma, sets the main goal of passing the “Anti-plagiarism” test. [23] [24]
  • Teachers' unscrupulous actions: the use of "closed" programs with extensions ("Anti-plagiarism University"), the refusal to issue full-text reports to students on it, the unlawful restriction on the number of inspections, and the staging of the scientific leadership (teachers often do not read the work with the "shortage" of the "required percentage"), individual cases - direct distortions on the part of teachers. [25] [26] [27]
  • The massive emergence of various fraudulent services (increasing interest through text encoding, rewriting, etc.), often these services are a continuation of unscrupulous teaching activities. [28] [29] [30] [31] [32] [33] [34]
