Notes
- β From an article by the Order of France : The history of colonial orders began in the second half of the 19th century. Local rulers of territories declared by France as their colonies and protectorates established orders to award both their subjects and officials of the French colonial administration. Some time after the establishment of some of these orders, the French government declared its "colonial", with their inclusion in the general order system of France. The awards were made on behalf of the French administration, not only in the colony, but also outside it. These orders were widely awarded to officials of the French colonial administration, local residents, as well as foreigners.
