The construction of the mosque began in 1364–1367 at the end of the Yuan Empire [2] . Then it was rebuilt in 1391 during the Ming Empire . The building underwent several reconstructions during the Qing Empire [1] .

The government of Shanghai included the Songjiang Mosque in the list of cultural monuments under its special protection on August 26, 1908. In 1985, the mosque was carefully renovated and included in the list of major cultural monuments. In 1989, the mosque was reopened to the public [3] .

The territory of the mosque is 4,900 m². The architecture of the buildings combines traditional Arabic and Chinese motifs. The mosque faces north with a facade and consists of a main hall, a prayer niche, a corridor, two halls for sermons and a bathroom. In the eastern part of the mosque is a tower where Muslims can offer a prayer made in the Arabic style with transverse ridges and domed roofs. The prayer hall is located opposite the tower in the western part of the mosque. It is divided into rear and front, representing the architecture of the times of the Yuan and Ming empires, respectively [1] .
