Aleksey Alekseevich Shovkunenko ( Ukrainian Oleksiy Olekіyovich Shovkunenko ; March 21, 1884, Kherson - March 12, 1974, Kiev ) - Soviet Ukrainian painter and teacher. Chairman of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR (1949-1951).

Content
Biography
In 1899 he was given as an apprentice to the Kherson icon painting workshop. In 1901-1908 he continued his studies at the Odessa Art School under the direction of K. K. Kostandi , G. A. Ladyzhensky , D. Kraynev.
In 1917 he graduated from the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Petrograd (workshop of V. Savinsky , 1909-1917).
Since 1913 - a participant in the exhibitions of the Association of South Russian artists . After graduating from the Academy he returned to Ukraine.
In 1917–1922 he was a teacher at the Kherson proletarian art studio, since 1926 - the Odessa Polytechnic of Fine Arts.
In 1924-1929 he was a member of the Society named after K. Kostandi.
In 1935-1965 he was a professor at the Kiev State Art Institute .
Among his students were A. G. Maksimenko , V. G. Puzyrkov , A. M. Lopukhov, and many other prominent artists, including several dozens of honored and popular artists of Ukraine.
Member of the Board of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR (1938-1968), and in 1949-1951 was its chairman.
Died March 12, 1974 in Kiev. Buried at Baikovo cemetery .
Creativity
Watercolor painter. Master of landscape and still life .
Author of many psychological portraits of famous writers, actors, sculptors, military leaders and other famous personalities (“ B.I. Yakovlev ”, 1944; “ S.A. Kovpak ”, 1945; “ M.G. Lysenko ”, 1947 - all in the Museum Ukrainian fine art (Kiev), P. G. Tychyna , M. F. Rylsky , N. M. Uzhviy , artist G. K. Savitsky [2] and many others), industrial landscapes (cycle " Dneprostroy ", 1930-1932 , MUII), landscapes of Ukraine, Moldova, the Caucasus, the Urals, Kabardino-Balkaria, Bashkiria, etc.
Among the portraits belonging to the best achievements of the artist, art historians singled out “Portrait of E. R. (mistake!) Orbinsk” (1924), daughter of astronomer Artemy Robertovich Orbinsky, granddaughter of economist Robert Orbinsky . A. Shovkunenko was able to reveal the character of a woman, reached a consonant image of a holistic color solution of the work, sustained in a warm golden brown scale [2] .
