- On November 30, Joseph Brahma patented a hydraulic press .

- The Introduction to Homer ( lat. Prolegomena ad Homerum ) by the German scientist F. A. Wolf was published, which laid the foundation for the Homer's question and the critical approach in anti-science .

- July 20 [31] - Grigory Ivanovich Shelikhov (b. 1747), Russian explorer, navigator, industrialist and merchant from the Shelekhov clan, founder of the first Russian settlements in America.
