Content
Business Model
As a “contribution”, garbage banks accept waste separated by type, opening accounts to the persons who brought it to it, where the weight and type of the delivered waste are recorded [3] [2] [4] .
Wholesale batches of separated garbage are handed over to the recyclers or sold to any other interested parties (for example, collectors, contemporary artists, etc.) [6] [3] . The cost of garbage usually changes every day, depending on the level of demand [6] .
After sale, money equivalent to the type, weight of the “deposit” and the current market value of the delivered waste is credited to the accounts of “depositors” [6] [3] [4] . At the same time, about 85% goes to the client, 15% to the “bank”.
The possibility of withdrawing funds from “investors” arises only some time after implementation, for example, 3 months, which reduces the risk of a business operator [2] [3] .
Clients of a garbage bank can be both individuals and groups, for example, households, schools, etc. [6] .
In addition to the reception and wholesale of waste, some garbage banks have opened units involved in direct processing turning them into products [3] .
In the development of the business, garbage banks began to take organic waste by processing them into compost and selling them to agricultural producers [4] .
Performance Indicators
The first bank of garbage Bank Sampah Gemah Ripah in 2012 took 500-700 kg per month [2] .
One of the garbage banks - Bank Sampah Cahaya Partha Jaya reported in 2012 that every month he receives 5 tons of various garbage worth about 15 million rupees (1,590 US dollars) [6] .
In 2013, the Balikpapan Garbage Bank reported on 2-3 tons of waste collected per month [4] . It reported that the average family manages to save about 50,000 rupees (about $ 5) a month with this bank.
In 2012, garbage banks “controlled” from 30% to 40% of the plastic waste market in their regions [3] .
History
The concept of a garbage bank was invented in 2008 by Bambang Suwerda, who created the first Bank Sampah Gemah Ripah / Bank Sampah Bantul [6] [2] in Yogyakarta on the island of Java ( Indonesia ). The creation of an enterprise for the collection and recycling of garbage was prompted by concern for the problem of sanitation in his native area [3] .
Subsequently, the idea quickly spread and, thanks to the low entry threshold, independent garbage banks began to appear throughout Indonesia [4] [6] [3] .
In the early 2010s, Bambang Suerda received a proposal to introduce the concept of a garbage bank in Thailand [6] .
At the end of June 2012, Indonesia already had 782 banks of garbage, with a total turnover of 31 billion rupees [2] .
In 2012, Bambang Suerda was awarded the Ashoka Foundation for its innovative approach to the separate collection of garbage [3] .
The Indonesian authorities, highly appreciating the model of garbage banks, joined in its promotion, implementation and support [3] [2] [7] .
City administrations began to establish additional containers for separate collection of garbage, as well as provide annual assistance to each bank of garbage [6] .
