Robert Day was an insistent collector of antiques, constantly searching for new exhibits in his collection. He participated in a well-established family business for the production of saddlery including a sports store, well known among fans of Cork fishing. The Scott family, from which his wife, Rebecca, originated, owned an extensive hardware business in King Street (now McCurtain). They lived on Myrtle Hill on the outskirts of Cork until 1906 , then on Patricks Hill.

He was president of the Historical and Archaeological Society of Cork from 1894 to 1914 . Gathered a huge collection of antiquities of Ireland. This collection was presented at an auction in 1915 and its parts formed the basis of the Irish sections of the archaeological collections of John Hunt ( Hunt Museum , Limerick ), the Birmingham Archaeological Society, the Ulster Museum (Eng.) And the National Museum of Ireland , Dublin [1] . The Department of Archeology at the University of Cork University is trying to trace the further movement of the exhibits of the Robert Day collection, which were sold at this auction.
