Josef Kalasanz Pestion (June 7, 1853, Bad Aussee - May 4, 1922, Vienna ) - Austro-Hungarian philologist, Scandinavian and translator.

Born in the territory of the current land of Styria . He studied ancient languages and Germanic studies in Graz from 1873 to 1875 and in Vienna from 1875 to 1877. Then he worked as a freelance scientific journalist, since 1886 he was in the public service in the imperial library system. Since 1888, he worked at the political library at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in 1891 entered its governing council, and in 1896 headed it. Since 1901, he had the rank of regirungsrat (senior government official). In 1920, he retired, but in 1921 he was reinstated in the service as the head of one of the departments of the library. He was buried at the Central Cemetery of Vienna.
He began his scientific career with a study of the poetry of Ancient Greece, but then switched to Scandinavian studies. He was one of the largest experts in the Scandinavian languages of Europe of his time; The main focus of his research was Icelandic . He translated a number of monuments of Old Icelandic literature, as well as works by contemporary Scandinavian writers. His main works are Griechische Dichterinnen (1876), Griechische Philosophinnen (1882), Aus Hellas, Rom und Thule (1882), Einleitung in das Studium des Altnordischen (1882 and 1887), Isländische Märchen (1884), Island. Das Land und seine Bewohner ”(1885),“ Lappländische Märchen ”(1886), grammar of Danish (1888), Swedish (1889) and Norwegian (1890) languages, many translations from Old and New Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian. His main work is considered the work “Isländ. Dichter der Neuzeit in Charakteristiken und übersetzten Proben ihrer Dichtung "(1897). His translations of Scandinavian poetry published under the pseudonyms J. Calion and Svend Christiansen.
