10th New York Infantry Regiment

The 10th New York Infantry Regiment ( 10th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment ) was one of the infantry regiments of the Union Army during the American Civil War . The regiment was recruited for 2 years of service and took part in many battles of the Army of the Potomac, from the Seven-Day Battle to the Battle of Chancellorsville. In May 1863, the regiment was disbanded, and the rank and file, recorded for three years of service, formed the 10th New York Infantry Battalion, which served until the end of the war.

Formation

The regiment was formed in New York and on April 27, 1861, was recruited into the federal army for a period of two years. The commander of the regiment became Colonel Walter McChesney, the lieutenant colonel - Alexander Elder and the major - John Marshall. The regiment used the Zouav uniform and was known as the “National Guard Zouaves” or “McChesney Zouaves”.

Battle Path

On June 6, 1861, the regiment was sent on the Florida steamer to the Virginia Peninsula in Fort Monroe, where it was handed over to the Virginia Department. Colonel McChesney soon left the regiment. In September, the regiment was led by Colonel .

In May 1862, the regiment was located in Norfolk and Portsmouth, and on June 5, the Empire City was brought to Yorktown, from where it was taken by Arrowsmith to Whitehouse on the Pomanka River. There, from June 14 to June 15, they encountered the Stuart raiders (during his raid around McClellan ).

On June 7, the regiment was included in the 3rd Brigade of the 2nd Division of the 5th Corps of the Potomac Army ( Warren Brigade).

At the end of June, the regiment participated in the Seven-Day Battle, where 4 officers and 11 soldiers were killed, 2 officers and 38 wounded, and 1 officer and 69 soldiers missing. In particular, at Gaines Mill, the regiment lost 10 people killed and wounded, and at Malvern Hill - one.

In late August, the regiment was returned to Fort Monroe, and from there they were transferred by sea to Centerville, and on August 30, the regiment participated in the second battle at Bull Run . Sykes Division did not participate in the famous attack of Porter; Warren's small brigade (10th and 5th New York) was put on the left flank of the army with the support of 6 guns of the Hazlett battery. 6 mouths of the 10th New York were turned into a rifle chain. At 4:30 pm, the brigade hit Longstreet's division, which took Warren by surprise. The rifle chain immediately began to retreat, and behind it the rest of the regimental companies — they ran to the positions of the 5th New York, which could not shoot, so as not to hit its own. The regiment fled to Henry Hill, having lost 1 officer and 33 privates while the retreat killed 3 officers and 52 privates, and 1 officer and 25 privates missing [1] .

In September, the regiment was transferred to the French Division, to the Max Weber Brigade. During the battles of Southern Mount and Entity, the regiment was kept in reserve and it suffered no losses. September 19, he was involved in the battle of Shepherdstown .

In December, the regiment was listed in the brigade of John Enryuz and was involved in the battle of Fredericksburg . French's division that day first attacked the positions of southerners on the heights of Mari. The first was Nathan Kimball’s brigade, and Andrews’s brigade was second. When Kimball's team departed, Andrews's team began a shootout. During this battle, 3 officers were lost and 12 privates killed, 42 privates and six officers were injured, among them Colonel Bendix, who passed command of captain Salmon Winchester, after whose death captain George Hopper took command.

In January, the regiment took part in the “ Mud March ”.

On April 26, 1863, Captain Hopper was promoted to major, and on April 27 the regiment was transferred to the William Hays brigade.
